An April 2026 report on the best careers in the AI age found that physical therapy will be among the most stable professions. With ChatGPT and other AI tools now handling tasks once done by people, a new study by GoTu, the largest dental talent marketplace, shows which jobs can’t be automated easily.
- Physical therapists will have the most secure careers, with only a 10% chance of being replaced by AI.
- The healthcare sector offers the safest jobs, as surgeons and dentists also make the top 10 future-proof careers.
- Receptionists face the highest automation risk at 91%, making them the most vulnerable workers in America.
The research examined 30 different careers to find which ones will survive automation. The report looked at factors like automation risk, showing how likely AI is to replace each role, plus median yearly salaries that reflect earning potential. The study also examined 10-year job growth projections, unemployment rates by profession, and public interaction scores measuring how much human contact each job requires. These factors were combined to show which careers are safest from AI replacement.
Here’s a look at the top 10 most stable careers in the age of AI:
| Job Title | Automation Risk | 10-Year Job Growth Projections | Unemployment Rate by Occupation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical Therapists | 10% | 11% | 0.6% |
| Surgeons | 10% | 3% | 0.2% |
| Dentists | 8% | 4% | 0.9% |
| Construction Managers | 13% | 9% | 1.8% |
| Police and Detectives | 13% | 3% | 0.0% |
| Psychologists | 20% | 6% | 0.3% |
| Information Security Analysts | 53% | 29% | 2.1% |
| Dental Hygienists | 39% | 7% | 0.4% |
| Social Workers | 12% | 6% | 2.1% |
| Lawyers | 31% | 4% | 0.8% |
1. Physical Therapists
- Automation risk: 10%
- Median yearly salary: $101K
- 10-year job growth: 11%
- Unemployment rate: 0.6%
- Public interaction score: 99/100
- Stability score: 100/100
Physical therapists have the safest jobs in America. Only 1 in 10 face any automation risk, the lowest threat among all careers. The profession is also adding positions faster than most others, expanding by 11% through 2036, which means roughly 30K new openings. Therapists’ salaries average $101K yearly, and barely anyone struggles to find work, with unemployment at just 0.6%. The work requires constant hands-on patient care, which is why it’s unlikely that machines can take it over.
2. Surgeons
Surgeons come second among the safest careers, facing the same 10% automation risk as physical therapists. They earn the highest pay of any job in the study at $239K yearly, nearly double what most other secure careers offer. The profession is also projected to grow at 3% over the next decade. Plus, almost no one in this field goes without work, with unemployment at only 0.2%, among the lowest.
3. Dentists
Dentists rank third with the smallest automation risk of any profession, at just 8%. They make $179K per year, and the field is expanding by 4% through 2036. Beyond that, less than 1% of dentists have trouble finding work, as there is always demand for their services. Like surgeons, dental work requires direct patient care, scoring 94 out of 100 for human interaction, putting it among the safest long-term careers from AI disruption.
4. Construction Managers
Construction managers are also among the future-proof professions. About 13% of their work could get automated eventually, but positions are increasing by 9% over the next 10 years, among the fastest expansion rates. Their pay averages $107K, and the industry-wide unemployment is only at 1.8%, higher than healthcare roles but still below most sectors. Managing construction sites involves talking with workers and clients all day, which helps slow down technological replacement.
5. Police and Detectives
Police work rounds out the top five safest jobs from AI. Automation could affect 13% of police duties, the same as construction managers, while officer positions will likely grow at 3% over the coming decade. Another advantage is that whoever wants to work in these roles finds it, as law enforcement has the lowest unemployment rate in the country. Officers also earn around $77K annually, less than healthcare professionals, but still with guaranteed work.
Cary Gahm, Co-Founder of GoTu, commented on the study:
“As AI reshapes the workforce, one thing is clear: patient facing healthcare jobs are needed more than ever. The hands-on, human nature of dental services makes it critical to patient care and positive experiences. That’s exactly why we built GoTu, because the demand for skilled dental professionals will only grow, and they deserve a platform that meets that moment.“
