Maryland Dental Assistant Requirements

In Maryland, dental assistants can work at different levels depending on their training and certifications. The Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners (MSBDE) acknowledges the following roles: 

Basic Dental Assistant

• No specific education or certification is required. 
• Dental assistants at this level must work under the supervision of a licensed dentist. 
• This level can not perform expanded duties that require a certification. 

Expanded Functions Dental Assistant 

• Must complete formal training in expanded functions, including placing sealants, impressions, and restorative work 
• EFDAs in Maryland must be certified by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) and approved by the MSBDE.

Maryland Dental Assistants can obtain certain certifications and licensing to increase their scope of work. To take X-rays in Maryland, dental assistants must complete a Board-approved radiology course or hold a Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) certification from DANB. Those looking to perform expanded functions must complete an Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) training program approved by the Maryland State Board and pass the Maryland Expanded Function Examination or an equivalent DANB exam. Additionally, all dental assistants performing expanded functions or radiographic procedures are required to maintain a CPR certification from an approved provider.
